How to update your dog's microchip details
A microchip only gets your dog home if the details on it are right. If you've moved house, changed your number or taken on a dog, here's how to update them. This follows GOV.UK guidance for England and Dogs Trust's advice.
4 steps to update your details
Find the microchip number
Check your dog's paperwork, such as a microchip certificate, vet records or pet passport. If you can't find it, ask a vet, dog warden or rescue centre to scan your dog.
Find which database it's on
Enter the number on check-a-chip to see which database your dog is registered with.
Contact that database
Update your address, phone number and other details. Depending on the database, you can do this online, by phone or by post. You might be charged a fee.
Check it's done
Make sure the database confirms the change. Do the same every time you move or change your number.
If you've bought or taken on a dog
You must make sure the microchip details are updated to you. Before getting a dog, ask for proof it's been microchipped, such as a microchip certificate, vet records or a pet passport.
If you buy a puppy from a breeder, the breeder must microchip it and register it in their name first. You then apply to the database to transfer keepership to you.
What the law says
- Dogs must be microchipped and registered on an approved database by 8 weeks old
- You're responsible for keeping the details up to date
- You can be fined up to £500 if your dog isn't microchipped, or isn't registered on an approved database
- A microchip doesn't replace a collar and tag with your name and address in public
Approved databases and scams
GOV.UK lists the approved databases. If you get an unexpected email from a database asking for money, GOV.UK warns it could be a scam. The rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set by their own governments, so check their guidance if you live there.
