Why does my dog keep running away?
Dogs run off for a reason. Working out which one applies to your dog is the first step to stopping it. These reasons and tips come from Dogs Trust.
6 common reasons
Fear or panic
Fireworks, storms, unfamiliar people, strange smells or fast-moving things like cars can frighten a dog into running off to hide.
Boredom
A dog without enough to do may go looking for something interesting they can hear, see or smell.
Chasing
Wildlife, cats, runners and moving vehicles can set off a dog's urge to chase.
Over-excitement or frustration
Seeing other dogs, people or squirrels they can't reach can tip some dogs over.
Being left alone
Some dogs try to get out when they're left, or when they see you getting ready to leave. They may slip out with you or try doors and windows.
Recall that isn't reliable yet
If your dog doesn't come back every time, they should stay on a lead or long line for now. See our recall training guide.
When your dog runs off: what not to do
- Don't shout or speak harshly. It can frighten your dog away
- Don't run towards them. Follow calmly, as quickly as you can
- Don't tell them off when they come back, or they'll be slower to return next time
How to prevent it
- Give enough exercise for their age, health and size, plus toys, training, scent games and food puzzles
- Practise recall often, and only let them off the lead in secure areas until it's reliable
- Secure the garden, doors and gates. See [how to stop your dog escaping the garden](/stop-dog-escaping-garden)
- Keep a predictable routine, with water always available and a comfortable place to rest
When to see a vet
Dogs Trust advises a vet check for sudden changes in behaviour, new fearfulness, or a dog that stops coming back when called. These can have medical causes, such as hearing loss. For ongoing problems, Dogs Trust runs a Behaviour Support Line.
If your dog does get away
Follow our lost dog guide. If your dog wears a PawTrak collar, whoever finds them can scan the QR plate and message you and share their location.
- Switch on lost mode on your dog's page so finders see an urgent banner.
- No app needed to scan it.
- It isn't a GPS tracker. It helps the person who finds your dog reach you.
