How to toilet train a puppy
Toilet training comes down to routine and rewards. Puppies learn at different speeds and accidents are normal. This guide follows PDSA's advice.
When to take your puppy out
- First thing in the morning, and whenever they wake from a nap
- Every 2 to 3 hours during the day
- Shortly after meals
- After play, or partway through a long play session
4 steps
Stick to a routine
Take them out at the same times every day.
Use a lead at first
It keeps your puppy focused on going to the toilet rather than exploring.
Pick a cue word
Say something like "toilet" or "hurry up" each time, so they link the word with going.
Reward straight away
When they go outside, give lots of praise and a tasty, healthy treat right away.
Accidents
Accidents happen because your puppy hasn't had enough chances to go outside, not because they're being naughty. Never punish your puppy for an accident. Clean the area thoroughly so the smell doesn't draw them back, note when it happened, and take them out sooner next time.
Watch for signs they need to go, such as circling and sniffing the floor. If problems carry on, ask your vet or vet nurse, who may refer you to a behaviourist.

Keeping your dog safe if they get lost
In public, your dog must wear a collar and tag with your name and address. A PawTrak QR plate on the same collar gives whoever finds your dog a quick way to reach you.
- Any phone camera reads it. No app needed.
- The finder can message you and share their location.
- Free profile with every collar.
